Photo of the Day for June 24
Balmoral Mill
This is an amazing place to visit, a fully functional grist
mill. The machinery fills all 3 floors of the building and
the whole place is alive with sound and dust, like a living giant.

Elephant Lamp Omen
Little did we know that this cute lamp was really an omen of
day ahead.

Capt'n Dave in front of the Lawrence House
The largest fully-rigged ship ever to be built in
Canada, was built here in 1874. The huge ship, built
just across the road, dwarfed the house and the bow
over hung the road. It must have been quite a site.

Prison Crew ?
Back home, these folks might be mistaken for a prison crew. A
group of tidal bore rafters brave the Minas basin in "Survival suits".
We will have to try this sometime. It's probably a blast on
a nice sunny hot day (the Minas basin must be about 50 deg. at it's warmest).

Period bedroom
Almost all of the furniture in this house is original.

Victorian era radiator cover
I had seen these in an old Sears catalog, but not in real
life. What a beautiful way to hide an ugly cast iron radiator.

Truro tourist info center
Almost every large town has one - look for the big question mark
on a brown sign. These folks always go out of their way to
help.

I guess it means south
What to do if you don't have a 'South' sign handy.

If you drive fast enough...
Gray day, it started to rain - hard enough to use the wipers
but not enough to put the top up! Of course the long straight
roads and light traffic helped.

Cozy Caboose
A unique room for the night.

Train Station Inn
You have a choice of staying in the station or one of the
4 cars. Two more are being converted and will be ready by
May '99.

Choo Chooo!
Must be a neat way to travel across the country, in a converted caboose.
Traveling in a working caboose is a rather grungy loud and stinky affair,
judging by the caboose awaiting renovation.

Spur wheel at the Grist Mill
This is the big wheel in the center of the mill that drives
the whole affair. It's very impressive to see this huge, heavy
gear spinning around while everything in the building creaks and
groans.

Lots of Victorian gingerbread made here.

Ferry to P.E.I.
This is the old-fashioned way to P.E.I. We may return to
Nova Scotia via ferry.
